What is to be done? Today’s ConWorkShop theme is themeless. So now I’ve got my work cut out for me, desperately trying to thwitch themelessly on to a substitute theme. But necessity is the birthmother of invention, as the saying goes. When I wrote what I thought was a simple and straightforward sample sentence, I found I needed to coin several new words for it.

During the Great War, many locally produced ersatz goods were created to alleviate shortages caused by wartime conditions.
